Motorcycle Mexican Insurance for US Riders

Whether you're carving Baja's coast or running a mainland tour, Mexico requires a real Mexican policy. We cover street, touring and adventure bikes with liability, full coverage, medical and gear protection.

Motorcycle Mexican insurance for US riders touring Baja and the mainland

Why Riders Need a Real Mexican Policy

Mexico requires every vehicle on its roads — motorcycles included — to carry valid liability insurance from a Mexican-licensed insurer. Your US or Canadian motorcycle policy is not recognized by Mexican authorities. That isn't a technicality: Mexico operates under a Napoleonic legal system, so after a serious accident a rider can be detained while authorities sort out fault and financial responsibility. A genuine Mexican policy with bilingual legal aid and a bail bond is how you demonstrate that responsibility and stay out of custody.

We write coverage for every kind of bike that crosses the border: street and cruiser bikes, full-dress touring rigs, sport bikes, and adventure / ADV machines built for the long mainland and Baja routes.

What a Motorcycle Policy Can Include

Required liability for injury and property damage you cause to others
24/7 bilingual legal aid and bail bond after an accident
Optional full coverage for collision, theft and total loss on your bike
Medical payments coverage for the rider
Coverage toward riding gear and accessories on the bike
Recommended Combined Single Limits of $300,000–$500,000

Group Rides and Multiple Bikes

Riding south with a club or a group of friends? Every bike in the pack needs its own valid Mexican policy — there's no blanket coverage that follows the group. Each rider should buy and print or save their own policy before the crossing. For frequent riders, an annual policy usually costs less than buying short-term coverage trip after trip.

Liability vs. Full Coverage

Required liability protects other people and provides your legal aid and bail bond. To protect the bike itself against a drop, a collision, or theft, add full coverage, which settles in US dollars at US labor rates up to your bike's stated value.

Don't Forget Your Import Permit

Riding to the Mexican mainland also requires a Banjercito Temporary Import Permit (TIP) and an FMM tourist card. The Baja peninsula and the Sonora Free Zone don't need a TIP. Those are separate government requirements — your insurance policy is in addition to them.
