Boat & Watercraft Mexican Insurance for US Travelers
Towing a boat or jet ski down to Baja or the Sea of Cortez means two different exposures — the rig on the highway and the vessel on the water. We cover both so your fishing trip is protected end to end.
Two Exposures, One Trip
A boat trip into Mexico has two distinct insurance needs. On the road, the tow vehicle and the boat trailer behind it are on Mexican highways, and Mexico requires valid liability insurance from a Mexican-licensed insurer for that vehicle — your US or Canadian policy is not recognized by Mexican authorities. On the water, the boat or personal watercraft itself faces its own risks. We put both pieces in place so you're covered from the driveway to the launch ramp and out on the water.
We write coverage for the full range of watercraft that head south: center-consoles and fishing boats, pangas and skiffs, ski and wakeboard boats, and jet skis or other personal watercraft (PWC).
What These Policies Can Cover
Don't Forget the Trailer
The boat trailer is part of your rig and should be listed on the auto policy with its own value. A trailer that isn't declared may not be covered if it's damaged or stolen on the trip. If you want the boat and trailer protected for damage or theft on the road, add full coverage, which settles in US dollars at US labor rates up to the stated value.
Frequent Fishing Trips
If you run the same Baja or Sea of Cortez circuit several times a year, compare buying short-term coverage each trip against an annual policy for the tow vehicle. The required road liability is the foundation; the on-water coverage is layered on top.
Towing to the Mexican mainland also requires a Banjercito Temporary Import Permit (TIP) and an FMM tourist card, and boats themselves can carry their own permitting rules. The Baja peninsula and the Sonora Free Zone don't need a vehicle TIP. Those are separate government requirements — your insurance policy is in addition to them.
